Urinal cubes help save 16 million litres of water

Written in Action Stream - 30 March 2009

The Family Law Courts in Sydney adopted the Desert Cube Waterless Urinal System in mid 2005 as part of their water conservation program. The aim of the project was to help reduce water usage in the building.

As part of the initiative, the Desert Cube was installed in conjunction with flow restrictors on all taps. The first year's water readings have indicated savings of 16,000,000 L or a 72% reduction in total water used and cost saving of $31,000.

The Desert Cube is a biodegradable dissolvable cube which is placed into the base of the existing trough or urinal bowl.

The cube contains naturally occurring microbes which break down the uric scale in the waste pipe. It does this without the need for flushing.
